Zabu encountered a young boy named Kevin Plunder as he was about to be attacked by a group of Gentleman-Apes. Zabu saved Kevin, and the two became companions. Zabu shielded the boy as he grew to adulthood, and at some point took to the identify Ka-Zar, which implies "Son of your Tiger"
